Suppressing weeds, beating slugs and other pests – the miracle of Strulch!
I am unfortunate to live in an area where the Romans kindly introduced ground elder. There are many pernicious weeds that gardeners have to deal with but I feel that this one may be the worst. The fact that its spaghetti-like roots can form a dense mat in the soil and that they easily break when you are trying to remove them makes it very hard to eradicate once it has made a home in your garden. Like a Dr Who timelord it is able to regenerate itself if any part of root or leaf is left behind.
I have found that the best way is reduce if not entirely eliminate ground elder is to go systematically through small areas of the garden/border digging it out over and over again. Back-breaking and sometimes heart-breaking work! The best hope is to break its stranglehold on my borders and then plant vigorous plants densely so that they can act as a suppressant in themselves.
However, I have a new friend in my arsenal and that is a mulch called ‘Strulch’ it is a thick straw based mulch that is the most effective weed suppressant mulch I have found. It is also outstanding at keeping slugs and snails at bay, I lost very few dahlias last year due to Strulch and it has also proved very effective at preventing the army of pheasants that invade my garden every year looking eating all my carefully planted spring bulbs – whether it is the straw smell that confuses them or they simply don’t like pecking through it I don’t know, all I care about is it works!
I use this also as a ‘top dressing’ to make beds look smarter too. I have recently replaced bark chip in a traditional rose bed with Strulch and it looks fantastic. I am delighted to now be working with Strulch as one of their stockists, in fact the only one for Hampshire. I have supplies of 150l bags, which you can’t buy from garden centres, to buy and collect. At this size, compared to the 30-50l bags of mulch or dressing you buy this works out to be a lot cheaper for a far superior product! Please contact me on email@example.com to buy.
