I came back from holiday this year to find my onions had bolted in my absence. I managed to rescue some of the onions which later found their way into my chutneys, where being slightly less tender and juicy wasn’t too much of an issue.
However, given how much I love allium heads it seemed a waste to simply discard the flower heads. So I duly chopped the heads off with nice long stalks and simply inserted them into some planters. This had the double benefit of the onion smell deterring various vegetable pests like carrot fly and the like and also made for a pretty site from my kitchen window!
